Since a very young age I have shown huge interest for anything technical, I am not scared to ask questions and I am never satisfied by knowing that something “just works”, I like to know exactly how it works because in my opinion, it’s the best way to learn, especially in a constantly changing and developing industry.

In my current and previous roles I have worked well leading and being part of a team. It is important for me to challenge myself regularly and to become an active and valued member of the team I am working for. I am always pushing to improve myself and the systems/infrastructure around me. My dedication and passion means that I use my own time continuing to expand my knowledge or work on projects which can help benefit the organisation I am working for.

I am currently working at Runshaw College as an IT Services Technician. I have a wide variety of responsibilities as well as dealing with day to day 2nd/3rd line IT issues and liasing with 3rd parties and customers to implement and improve existing solutions. As a team, we proactively look after and maintain an infrastructure to support 10 thousand students and 800 members of staff. We are very much a hands-on team with most IT solutions managed and maintained inhouse which has given me high levels of exposure to multiple systems such as switch, proxy and router configuration and installation, large scale wireless solutions, VMWare infrastructure, SAN’s, Windows Active Directory/Group Policy and much more.

I finished studying at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk in 2014, obtaining a First in the subject of Computing.

I actively work with local charitable organisations, running their IT systems and I have also completed several IT based work placements in school environments. My charitable work means that I have had some great opportunities to single-handedly design and build a network from the ground up, which includes a Hyper-V environment with multiple domain controllers and remote access servers, IP Cameras, a VoIP Solution, Managed wireless for staff and guest access, a thorough backup solutions and more.

As well as the wide range of experience that I have gained from various voluntary roles and through paid work, I have gained my Microsoft Technology Associate Qualification and I have also received certification for the "VMware vSphere 6.5: Install, Configure, Manage" training provided by QA (qa.com). My plan is to continue to develop my knowledge with more training and qualifications.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my website and I really look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Sincerely
David Ashcroft

My Portfolio/Personal Projects

New Network Build from the Ground Up!

I was given a very interesting opportunity to design and build from the ground up a new network for a business that required new offices due to growth.

The new office space was built from the ground up which gave me the opportunity to design and implement everything from phone systems, servers and PC’s right down to cabling, sockets and lighting!

The system includes a VoIP phone system, 3 Windows Servers with virtulisation for replication and fail over. There are several end user PC's onsite spanned across three physical buildings. The full design and implementation was completed by myself and it has been a very interesting project to help expand my knowledge.

Although I am very pleased with the end result of this project, if I had one criticism it would be that my cable management could have been better.

My Home Network

I am always trying to learn more and develop my knowledge, my home network has allowed me to implement a geeky and technical house with a lot of automatic and intelligent systems built in.

My home network includes a HP server with VMWare, a fully managed wireless solution from Ubiquiti, managed switches, PoE cameras, heating, lighting and audio controlled over the network and more.

More Details of my Home Setup Coming Soon

My Cloud Dedicated Server used for Training

I have a dedicated server in Germany which I used for testing and training purposes.

The Server is running Windows Server 2012 R2 and is using Hyper-V with a range of virtual machines and pfSense at it's core. The server is used for training environments so that I can continue to expand my knowledge.

The setup for this server was a challenge, you can find out more about this and what I am doing with this server by clicking the button below.

My Work

IT Support Technician

Runshaw College - Leyland, Lancashire

September 2016 - Present

The IT Support Team at Runshaw are collectively responsible for the management of all IT systems across the network, anything from end user devices, all the way to switches, routers, WiFi and storage. The IT Support Team proactively maintain an infrastructure to support 10 thousand students and 800 staff. Most of the IT infrastructure is managed and maintained inhouse which has given me exposure to a wide variety of systems, as well as opportunities to lead the implementation of new solutions. We also deal with 2nd/3rd line IT issues across the college network.

I believe in my time at Runshaw, I have had a genuine impact on the college IT Systems, seeing my projects and ideas become a reality, following them through from planning to implementation and completion gives me a great feeling of achievement. My mindset has been and will continue to be focused on implementing solutions and systems which are efficient, cost effective, easy to manage, secure and reliable.

On a daily basis I can be dealing with different technologies such as of AVAYA and Cisco switches, web filters and Cisco ASA routers, large scale wireless solutions, VMWare infrastructure, SAN’s, Windows Active Directory/Group Policy, Office365 and more. I also work closely with other departments such including the Service Desk, Dev Ops and Print Shop.

I have been involved and led many projects at Runshaw, but below are some of my more notable achievements:

I have been heavily involved with our Server 2016 AD/Windows 10 project in which I have introduced and virtualised new 2016 servers, promoted them to DCs , moved FSMO roles, redesigned and simplified AD group policies and OUs, as well as migrating DHCP, DNS and NTP with minimal disruption to end users.

I have also led the project for installing a Smoothwall proxy/web filter solution. This had to be fully planned, tested and configured before migrating users from our previous Sophos proxy servers. The solution consists of 4x servers which are spread across multiple sites and include high availability and replication to maximise efficiency and uptime. The system was implemented on time and with minimal disruption to user’s internet activity. The system runs effectively for approx. 2500 BYOD devices and 2000 college owned devices daily.
